(Nangutana: Reynante Dingcong (Facebook), May 22, 2012 at 1:38 A.M.)

TUBAG:

Catechism of the Catholic Church:

2413 Games of chance (card games, etc.) or wagers are not in themselves contrary to justice. They become morally unacceptable when they deprive someone of what is necessary to provide for his needs and those of others. The passion for gambling risks becoming an enslavement. Unfair wagers and cheating at games constitute grave matter, unless the damage inflicted is so slight that the one who suffers it cannot reasonably consider it significant.

1) Pastoral Statement ni late Jaime Cardinal Sin: (ON THE MORALITY OR IMMORALITY OF GAMBLING)

WHEN GAMBLING BECOMES IMMORAL
The trouble with these gambling activities begins when led by greed, undue competition and compulsive behavior, what was supposed to be an honest entertainment becomes intemperate betting or gambling. These then pass from adults who neglect their serious obligations and squander precious money to the youngsters. Indulging in such games seriously interferes with their academic formation as when more and more young people and students indulge in video games as pastime.

Considering however the miserable living conditions of millions of people in our country, gambling with high stakes can hardly be ever justified even for people with large fortunes, for they cannot escape the tremendous responsibility of social justice which forbids squandering money when millions of their brother Filipinos live in conditions of malnutrition and perpetual hunger – and even dying of starvation.

Especially in these present times when not only the national economy is in a tragic situation but so many millions in our country live in stark poverty, IT IS MORAL CRIME TO SQUANDER MONEY THAT SHOULD BE USED TO ALLEVIATE THE MISERABLE CONDITION OF PEOPLE, PARTICULARLY CHILDREN. Children must be protected from such games that are attractive as they are wasteful of time, money and talent.

2) ON ILLEGAL GAMBLING by the Bishops & Priests of the Diocese of Legazpi.

In an impoverished country like the Philippines, illegal gambling is like an octopus whose tentacles fleece the pockets of the poor of money that could have been spent on basic needs. And since it is ADDICTIVE, the general situation of poverty further deteriorates. In effect the values of hard work and sacrifice are disregarded. WHAT KIND OF NEW GENERATION CAN WE EXPECT IF CHILDREN AND YOUTH TODAY SEE THEIR ELDERS RELY MORE ON LUCK RATHER THAN ON HARD WORK?

3) ON SMALL TOWN LOTTERY by the Palawan Clergy

Specifically, PCSSTL is an evil that leads to:
a) WEAKENING AND BREAKUP OF FAMILY RELATIONSHIP – Failure of a husband to remit a part or all of his salary to the wife which trigger a series of quarrels between them.

b) SUPERETITIOUS BELIEFS – Against the First Commandment.

c) CHEATING – Employees in gov’t or private sectors deprive their employers of the output expected of them. They spend substantial part of their working hours transacting business with the “cobrador”

d) LYING – temptation to lie becomes very strong.

e) PERVERSION OF CHILDREN – A big number of school children as observed bet their money in the PCSSTL instead of using it for buying snacks or other school obligations.

f) LAZINESS – People are led to disregard their work and instead would restlessly await for the result of the draw.

g) FINANCIAL RUIN

h) ECONOMIC DOWNFALL – PCSSTL is a non-productive activity in the sense that IT DOES NOT PRODUCE ANY WEALTH. What circulates is the money already at hand. THIS LEADS TO THE EVNTUAL COLLAPSE OF THE ECONOMY AND GRADUAL STARVATION OF THE POPULACE.

4) Matod pa ni Ricardo Cardinal Vidal: (ON JAI-ALAI)

BETTING in itself is not ethically wrong. IT IS THE ABUSE OF IT THAT LEADS TO EVILS. To induce people beyond their means IS AN ABUSE. Besides, Jai-Alai betting is habit forming. The habit, once formed, like any vicious addiction, is difficult to control. Jai-Alai Fronton remain closed so that our people may not be led into temptation, but delivered from evil.

Yes, tourist also may be attracted to the Jai-Alai games , but I ask: SHAL WE EARN THEIR DOLLARS AT THE EXPENSE OF OUR MORALS?
